Do I need a lawyer to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Texas?

I have about $45,000 in credit card debt and medical bills. I'm a single renter with no major assets. I've been told Chapter 7 might help. Can I file myself or do I need an attorney?

You are not legally required to hire an attorney to file Chapter 7 — filing without a lawyer is called filing "pro se." However, bankruptcy law is complex and mistakes can result in your case being dismissed or debts not being discharged. With $45,000 in unsecured debt and no major assets, you may be a good candidate for a straightforward Chapter 7. Texas has generous exemptions, including a homestead exemption, vehicle exemption, and retirement account protections. Consider at least a one-time consultation with a bankruptcy attorney — many charge a flat fee of $1,000–$1,500 for a simple Chapter 7, which is often worth it for the peace of mind and correct handling.
